On Thursday, October 3, 2024, CIS Ontario Visual Arts Educators' Network members came together for a day of creativity and collaboration at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg. The event was a vibrant blend of art, networking, and inspiration, setting the stage for exciting developments in arts education across CIS Ontario schools.
The day began with a guided tour led by McMichael staff. Educators explored the gallery's diverse collection and reflected on how to incorporate these works into their classrooms. The group then ventured outside for a walking tour of the grounds, learning about the history of the McMichael family and the artists who frequented the space.
Following a delicious lunch on the patio, the conversation turned to plans for the upcoming CIS Ontario Visual Arts Festival (CISVAF). Energized by the surroundings, educators discussed strategies for making this year’s festival a dynamic and memorable experience for their students.
In the afternoon, the group participated in a hands-on mixed media workshop inspired by the work of artist Moridja Kitenge Banza. Teachers not only created their own pieces but also shared ideas and techniques, building valuable connections across the CIS Ontario Visual Arts Educators' Network.
Looking ahead, CIS Ontario is thrilled to welcome back grade 9–12 visual arts teachers and their students for CISVAF 2024, which will be held on November 22. This year, we are especially excited to collaborate with artist Donald Crétien and host the much-anticipated annual Student Art Battle.
If you have any questions or ideas, don’t hesitate to reach out through the CISO Connect Visual Arts Educators' Network Hub. We’re looking forward to an unforgettable festival!
