Visual Arts Educators' Network Professional Learning Day
This is a day of enriching professional learning from a visual arts lens. All member schools are welcome, even those not planning to be part of the CISVAF Visual Arts Festival. Join us to participate in teacher-focused workshops with McMichael artists, network with visual arts colleagues from CIS Ontario member schools, learn about CISVAF and assist in the planning and tour the McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
Professional Learning Day 2024
The 2024 Visual Arts' Educators' Network Professional Learning Day will be held Thursday, October 3, 2024 at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario.
Elementary, Middle & Senior Visual Arts Educators, join us to:
- participate in teacher-focused workshops with McMichael artists
- network with visual arts colleagues from CIS Ontario member schools
- learn about CISVAF 2024 and assist in the planning
- tour McMichael Canadian Art Collection facilities where CISVAF 2024 will be held
AGENDA
9:30 – 10:00 a.m. Arrival at McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, Ontario
9:45 – 10:15 a.m. Welcome to the gallery by the McMichael team
10:15 – 11:15 a.m. Gallery Tour
During this private tour of the gallery’s rich and diverse art holdings, teachers will explore art as an expression of personal experience and examine various cultural narratives of the past and present. This discovery of the McMichael’s permanent and special exhibitions including modern Inuit and Indigenous art, as well as paintings of Group of Seven and their contemporaries and more recent contemporary artistic movements, can provide insight on how classroom learning can be extended into a gallery setting.
11:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Outdoor Tour
Visit several historic landmarks of the McMichael’s grounds, such as the original McMichael home, Thomson Shack and Cemetery, as well as outdoor sculptures and art installations. The tour will also include a stop at the newly named Minokamik Garden to introduce a new ecological approach in the cultivation and maintenance of the gallery grounds.
12:00 – 12:45 p.m. Lunch catered by the Food Dudes
12:45 – 1:30 p.m. CISVAF 2024 Planning Meeting
1:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. Workshop – Artmaking
Place Topography: Explore, Design, Create; Mixed Media Studio
Do you think about the route you take to school or the path you follow daily to get home? During this thought-provoking mixed-media Signature Studio program developed in collaboration with contemporary artist Moridja Kitenge Banza, you will be encouraged to reimagine and recreate your daily environments. Inspired by the mysterious topography of the palm of the hand, you will identify the paths linking your own personal physical and imaginary spaces in order to map what you define as your own place.

The Visual Arts Educators' Network Professional Learning Day on September 22, 2023, at McMichael Canadian Art Collection was both a beautiful & powerful day for connection, collaboration, & professional learning for 33 visual arts educators from 23 CIS Ontario member schools.
The day included teacher-focused workshops with McMichael artists, networking with colleagues, CISVAF 2023 planning and a tour of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection galleries and facilities.
