New Teacher Orientation Workshop

First day jitters? No problem. This workshop provides an introduction to independent schools for teachers new to the profession in our member schools and/or new experienced teachers to CIS Ontario schools. It's also an opportunity for teachers to make connections with educators within the member community and get a crash course on the culture of independent school life in Ontario. You'll also get pro tips on supporting learning.

The 2021 Workshop

CIS Ontario's annual New Teacher Orientation is an introduction to independent schools for teachers NEW to the profession in our member schools and/or experienced teachers who are new to CIS Ontario schools. It also provides an opportunity to make connections with educators from other member schools.

SESSION DETAILS:

This year's program will be fully online, offered over a three-week period.

November 17, 2021 -- Session #1 Orientation to Independent Schools & the CIS Ontario Community

Sarah Craig, Executive Director and the CIS Ontario team will answer questions as they share an overview of the association's role in supporting our member schools. They will also provide an overview CIS Ontario's programs and services, including our networks, professional learning and student programs.

November 24, 2021 -- Session #2 Independent School Changing Expectations & Supporting Success For All Learners

Dr. Leanne Foster, Head of School at Trafalgar Castle School, will lead an interactive workshop through the lens of the Head of School about the changing expectations in independent schools and how to support the success of all learners.   

December 1, 2021 -- Session #3 Teaching and Learning in CIS Ontario Schools

Cohort 21 facilitators, Justin Medved, Associate Head of School - Academics, The York School, and Garth Nichols, Vice Principal of Strategic Innovation and Design, Havergal College, will lead participants in an interactive session focused on teaching and learning in CIS Ontario schools.

The 2020 Workshop

The 2020 Workshop transition to a virtual format and ran from November 25 to December 9, 2020. The three virtual sessions offered participants an opportunity to learn from current CIS Ontario member leaders: Leanne Foster, Head of School at Trafalgar Castle School, Cohort 21 Co-Leads: Justin Medved, Associate Head, Academics at The York School and Garth Nichols,  VP, Strategic Innovation & Design at Havergal College. CIS Ontario's Executive Director, Sarah Craig also offered a session that onboarded participants into the CIS Ontario Association and teaching in the independent school system.

The 2019 Workshop

The 2019 New Teacher Orientation Workshop, on October 2nd, was a great day of networking and learning, presented by Dr. Leanne Foster, Head of School, Trafalgar Castle. Our workshop attendees met at the BMO Institute for Learning and were introduced to Sarah Craig, Executive Director, CIS Ontario who gave a welcome and orientation to CIS Ontario. Dr. Foster then covered topics specific to success as an independent school educator. Please view the agenda for an outline of the day.
