Trinity College School (TCS) is a leading co-educational boarding and day school for approximately 600 young people from Grades 5-12. The School is situated on a beautiful 100 acre campus located in the town of Port Hope, Ontario, one hour’s drive east of Toronto. Academic Support Teacher, Grade 9-12

(full-time, commencing August 2022)

The successful candidate is dynamic and collaborative, with demonstrated understanding of the unique needs of the healthy growth and development of adolescents within a diverse independent school environment. The Academic Support Teacher will teach Learning Strategies and have IEP responsibilities for students with assessed learning exceptionalities and/or other learning challenges in Grades 9 through 12. The Academic Support Teacher works closely with students and faculty with the aim of helping students achieve success and grow as independent learners; strength in Grade 9 and 10 Mathematics and Science would be an asset. Strong communication skills and familiarity with psychoeducational assessment, instructional strategies, learning strategies, assessment accommodations and assistive technologies are essential to this position.

The ideal candidate will have Special Education qualifications or equivalent. 

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Academic Support, the Academic Support Teacher is a dynamic team player who understands the unique needs of the healthy growth and development of adolescents within a diverse, rigorous independent school environment. The Academic Support Teacher works closely with students (Grades 9 through 12) and faculty to support a range of learning needs and foster independence, resilience and self-advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Promote collaborative relationships with students and faculty in order to facilitate student learning
  • Provide academic support to students in Grades 9 through 12
  • Curriculum design and delivery of Learning Strategies credits
  • Development and delivery of skill building activities (individual, small and large group)
  • Create and maintain learning profiles of students with accommodations
  • Support and facilitate the implementation of accommodations
  • Routine communication with parents (and/or guardians) in support of student learning needs
  • Monitor individual student learning plans, collaborate in determining viable learning strategies for identified students, and provide feedback with regard to student success

The successful candidate will also be engaged in the co-curricular life of the School, including service learning, coaching recreational or competitive athletics, and/or working with the arts.

Qualifications and Attributes of our Ideal Candidate:

  • Ontario College of Teachers certification (Intermediate/Senior); additional qualifications in Special Education or equivalent
  • Familiarity with psychoeducational assessment, instructional strategies, learning strategies, assessment accommodations and assistive technologies 
  • Ability to support teachers in meeting the needs of diverse learners
  • Commitment to encouraging, nurturing, and supporting students
