CAMP COUNSELLOR
Branksome Hall, a leading independent International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, offers remarkable Day Camps during the summer, on a picturesque urban campus in the heart of Toronto. We offer a wide selection of camp options, for children aged 4 to 10, streamlined into three main categories: Arts, Sports, and STEM. Campers and staff will enjoy utilizing our beautiful 13-acre campus and our state-of-the-art facilities. The Opportunity:
Branksome Hall Day Camps (BHDC) is proud to deliver high quality programs that provide an opportunity for fun, friendships and learning to over 2,000 campers each year.
We are seeking responsible and passionate Camp Counsellors, who work cooperatively and collaboratively with colleagues, to guide campers in personal growth and skill development. Using their strong interpersonal skills to maintain open lines of communication with families and colleagues, successful Counsellor candidates demonstrate dedication, maturity and enthusiasm to ensure a safe and fun atmosphere for campers and staff.
Branksome Hall Day Camps (BHDC) will run for 8 weeks, June 26 to August 18, 2023, on weekdays from 8:15 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Counsellors may be required to be available beyond their standard hours to participate in After Care when requested or in the event of an emergency or other unexpected and time sensitive situation arises. Camps will not operate on July 3 or August 7 due to holidays.
There will be 3 mandatory Camp Staff Training days in June 2023, exact dates TBC.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Assist in the planning and delivery of camp activities
- Actively supervise all campers during activities, transitions and lunchtime
- Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, fair play, participation and skill development
- Assume responsibility for safety of campers and report any concerns or incidents as they arise as per camp protocols (completion of incident reports may be required)
- Engage actively with your campers throughout the entire camp day, including positive participation in all camp activities and planning and leading those as assigned
- Work to ensure all campers feel comfortable, safe and included
- Be a positive, respectful and effective role model for your campers and peers, and same as a representative of BHDC
- Lead groups from one activity to the next in an orderly manner
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including daily attendance and incident reports
- Be creative and adaptable in problem solving through situations, and seek assistance when necessary
- Understand, enforce, and follow all camp objectives, policies, safety guidelines and emergency procedures
- Be highly aware and attentive of all campers during drop off and pick up procedures, and carry this throughout the camp day with special attention to personal health and wellness needs
- Use appropriate communications for duration of time on site (i.e. before, during and after camp), as well as maintain open lines of productive communication with families and colleagues
- Maintain a clean and safe camp environment
- Attend all scheduled meetings and training
- Be punctual and organized
- Be flexible, as responsibilities and duties may change week to week due to staffing requirements, weekly enrollment and other contributing factors
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Experience:
- Previous camp experience or related experience working with youth/children
- Skills, education or relevant experience in the desired program area
- Current Standard First Aid/CPR certification required before start of camp
- High Five Principles of Healthy Child Development certification is an asset
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Police Record Check (CRC) required for staff 18 years of age or older, and Criminal Offense Declaration for those younger than 18 years of age
- Ability to problem solve effectively and work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to work as part of a team with a wide variety of ages and demographic groups
Working Conditions:
- Working in an outdoor environment in all weather conditions
- Participation in recreational swim and outdoor water activities
- May require working After Care (4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.) from week to week, as necessary
- May require assisting campers who identify as same gender with changing clothes
Physical Requirements:
- Physical ability to lead, and participate with, children of varying ages in a wide variety of challenging activities in any environment
- Lifting and moving camp equipment and supplies from one location to another
- Walking and/or standing for long periods of time (3+ hours at a time, 7+ hours per day)
