Senior Accountant

We are looking for a talented and pro-active Senior Accountant to work alongside an exceptional and accomplished team in the Finance Department.The Senior Accountant will support the Finance department with payroll, benefits, pension, tax, accounting, internal controls, quarterly and annual reporting, benchmarking and general projects. The successful candidate will have significant payroll experience, ability to multi-task in a high volume work environment and will have an approachable, friendly demeanor. This is a full-time permanent role reporting to Chief Financial Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares payroll calculations and input for monthly and bi-weekly payroll.
  • Prepares annual reconciliations, pension adjustments, and T4 slips.
  • Point of contact for general payroll and benefit related inquiries.
  • Responsible for the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and Non Faculty Pension Plan; preparation of monthly and annual reporting and remittances in adherence with Plan requirements.
  • Administration and reporting of Group Benefits Plan changes with insurance provider including review of monthly billings, reconciliations, add/termination employees.
  • Assist Finance Manager and CFO with preparation of monthly journal entries, general ledger account analysis, fiscal year-end working papers, and other reporting as required.
  • Prepares and reviews HST/GST rebate applications and provides associated analysis.
  • Ongoing awareness and evaluation of internal controls and make recommendations for improvements as appropriate.
  • Assist Finance Manager and CFO with special projects and reports including but not limited to; benchmarking initiatives, annual report preparation, school trips, fundraising events.

Work and Educational Experience:

  • 5+ years related work experience, preferably within an independent school environment.
  • Knowledge of CRA and provincial statutory requirements
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) or Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills to respond to general inquiries are required.
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and discretion in handling matters of a confidential nature.
  • Ability to multi-task, balance multiple demands and address tight timelines.
  • Strong computer skills using MS Office applications, including Word, Excel as well as proficiency with Google Suite of products. Experience with Blackbaud Suite of products an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organization skills.
  • Ability to work occasional hours beyond the normal work week to accommodate deadlines, work projects or events.
  • Ability to provide clearance of a Vulnerable Sector Background Check (required of educational institutions).
