Position Overview:

UCC is inviting applications for a dynamic Residential Assistant. The UCC RA program is a wonderful opportunity for new teachers, or those interested in the field, to formally develop expertise. Through the Wernham West Centre for Learning, all Residential Assistants will receive training in academic coaching, develop a project that enhances their professional experience and capture their working experience in a digital portfolio. In addition, this is an opportunity to be mentored by outstanding seasoned faculty members, and have phenomenal exposure to a top quality experience. This position is directly responsible for assisting with the pastoral care of 22-23 assigned boarding students at the College. The successful candidate will be committed to building relationships with all boarders and will work closely with a Senior House Adviser who is directly responsible for advising students on academic and social issues, as well as communicating with parents.  The secondary roles include day, evening and weekend supervision on a rotating basis of approximately 88 boarders who live on the campus of the College; participating in the weekend program on Saturday and Sunday; and professional development opportunities in upper school classrooms and in the Wernham & West Centre for Learning while supporting academic development for students living in the boarding houses.

Responsibilities:

  • Create, lead and organize weekend programming;
  • Manage weekend leave arrangements for boarders;
  • Encourage students in their pursuit of learning;
  • Provide academic support in area of subject specialty to individuals or groups;
  • Ensure that UCC’s regulations, ideals and standards are maintained;
  • Coordinate and run games, activities and sports with boarding groups;
  • Actively participate in the “New To Blue” Orientation on the Labour Day weekend;
  • Supervise and monitor breakfast attendance, compulsory study time after dinner, fitness rooms, weekend programs, weekend leave process and late night supervision of the residence following weekday evening curfew;
  • On a rotating basis, responsible for supervising weekend meals, and ensuring students are obeying weekend curfew;
  • Assist with class coverage when teachers are absent;
  • Participate in the co-curricular program – coaching, theatre, music, and community service activities;
  • Attend all required meetings, activities and morning assembly;
  • Update and review database (student attendance at various daily obligations, student participation in weekend programs, personal communication with families etc.);
  • Be available for Emergency Care assistance; this includes accompanying students for hospital visits;
  • Pursue personal professional development at the school.

Experience, Knowledge and Competencies:

  • University or college degree;
  • Bachelor of Education would be an asset;
  • Advising, coaching, and residential don experience would be an asset;
  • Fluency in a second language would be an asset;
  • Ability to build strong relationships with students, parents and colleagues;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Collaborative team player;
  • Good time management/priority setting skills;
  • Approachable and flexible with availability on evenings and weekends.

Accommodation:

  • The successful candidate must live in the bachelor apartment provided within the boarding community;
  • It is expected that the successful candidate would take most meals in the school dining room.
