As a key strategic partner in the senior leadership of the school, the Director of Human Resources is responsible for talent strategy planning and execution, ensuring human resources programs, policies and procedures reflect the talent strategy and are effectively aligned to ensure the achievement of the School’s mission and vision. 

The Director of Human Resources will be responsible for the School’s overall compensation strategy and provide direction, guidance and oversight to the School’s competitive positioning required to attract and retain employees. In addition to being responsible for managing the School’s group benefits, pension plans and negotiating employment contracts, the Director of HR will provide direction and guidance on employee relations issues, including professional conduct.


  • Lead and articulate the HR/Talent management strategy in support of The York School’s mission, vision, and organizational goals;

  • Responsible for the school’s overall compensation strategy by providing direction, guidance and oversight to the school’s salary grids ensuring regulatory compliance and competitive positioning required to attract and retain employees;

  • Responsible for the school’s group benefits and pension plans, working closely with the CFO to negotiate renewals and contracts;

  • Participate and collaborate as a member of the Leadership Team in setting HR strategy and championing the School’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion objectives and initiatives;

  • Ensure all employment policies, programs and procedures comply and follow best practices;

  • Conduct regular analysis of the effectiveness of HR policies on the operations of the School;

  • Work with the Head of School using business metrics and KPIs to design, establish, and maintain an effective organizational structure and FTE (staffing) compliment that supports the requirements of the school;

  • Manage the recruitment process, and the effective induction and onboarding program of new employees; 

  • Provide direction, coaching and guidance to the various levels of leadership and management of the School in all employee relations issues, including employee conduct and investigations; 

  • Lead and implement continued improvement in HR through innovative projects; 

  • Responsible for the fiscal management of the Professional Development, the Legal budget and in partnership with the CFO, the fiscal management of the salary and benefits budgets;

  • Oversee the Engagement Survey process of the School;

  • Lead the employee recognition programs for the School;

  • Lead the Growth and Development plan for faculty and all employees in promoting growth, learning and professional development for improved performance; 

  • Effectively contribute to employee communications regarding programs, changes, and initiatives;

  • Develop, implement, and manage strategies and individual/group programs that will create continuous learning and development for all employees.


  • Post-Secondary Degree and/or Certificate in Human Resources Management; 

  • CHRP or CHRL designation;

  • Ten years or more of progressive HR generalist experience across multiple HR disciplines;

  • Previous experience in the Education sector, an asset; 

  • Strong communication skills, written and verbal, including public speaking and group facilitation capability; 

  • Strong technical Talent Strategy and Human Resources knowledge of practices and proven commitment to staying current with legislation changes;
