THE ROLE

Reporting to the Head of School and working effectively with the senior leadership team, the Assistant Head of School - Academics (AHA) is the educational leader responsible for leading the day-to-day management of all aspects of the academic program.

The AHA will work collaboratively with the senior leadership team to advance the School’s mission, vision, and strategic plan and promote an inclusive school culture. By providing leadership, direction, and encouragement, the AHA will inspire and maintain high standards of teaching and learning and provide an atmosphere where students and staff can flourish.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the Head of School and Senior Leadership Team to envision and nurture a school community rooted in the values of the school.
  • Contribute an active member of the Senior Leadership Team supporting the implementation of organizational goals and priorities, as per the strategic plan.
  • Management of all aspects of the academic operations of the School, ensuring that all students are supervised in a safe and welcoming learning environment.
  • Leadership and management of the School’s curriculum, procedures, scheduling and reporting, ensuring they are effectively executed, on budget and according to schedule.
  • Lead and oversee the horizontal and vertical coordination, implementation, and integration of the RDS portrait of a future ready graduate, social emotional learning program, JK-8 curriculum, diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice initiatives, outdoor education and course specific curricular experiences.
  • Work with the Director of Student Life to develop class, teacher, transit and extra duty schedules, extracurricular activities, and substitute teachers.
  • Support and work with Director of Student Life and the Coordinators to implement strategic priorities for teaching and learning
  • Work closely with the Director of Student Life to promote ethical conduct and responsible student behaviour, and manage disciplinary issues in a fair, consistent, and caring manner according to the RDS Student Code of Conduct.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Student Life to set annual teacher professional growth goals and determine professional development opportunities to support program excellence and innovation in teaching and learning.
  • Foster a learning environment for teachers where they feel supported through observation and constructive feedback based on organizational competencies
  • Work with the Marketing & Communication Specialist to prepare the Weekly Community Connect email.
  • Hire and oversee, substitute teachers.
  • Participate in hiring teams for teachers and other staff as required.
  • Prepare coverage schedules and oversee time-off requests from teachers.
  • Coordinate all CAIS re-accreditation related processes.
  • Represent the Head of School as required

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE DESIRED

The AHA is a passionate and inspiring educational leader with a proven track record leading high performing teams in a JK-8 environment. A collaborative leader, this is someone who values and practices kindness and respect. Leveraging data and research to inform decision making, they also embrace the holistic concept of students and staff being known, cared for and engaged. This individual will demonstrate the following RDS core competencies: courage, relationship acuity, resourcefulness, communication, flexibility and adaptability, engagement, integrity and openness.

Additionally, this individual will embody the RDS leadership competencies of: decision making, leading with purpose, building effective teams, influence, managing complexity and strategic alignment.

Additional experience and skills:

  • Post-secondary Education at the University level
  • Teacher education training (B.Ed., M.Ed.) or significant teaching experience in another setting (i.e., University, College, or areas of specialized instruction such as music, athletics)
  • Eligibility for membership in the Ontario College of Teachers (or equivalent)
  • Technical fluency with Google Workspace and Student Information Systems
