The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Boarding Advisor who loves working with teenagers and possesses boundless energy to join our outstanding Boarding community. Boarding life encompasses everything outside of the classroom for the students who reside on campus, including friendships, homework, homesickness, and bedtimes. Reporting to the Director of Boarding, Boarding Advisors are responsible for the care and supervision of our 64 culturally diverse and academically motivated Grade 7-12 students after school, during exam periods, overnights, and on alternating weekends.

Our Boarding Advisors stay overnight in the Boarding House for their on-duty nights and have a fully furnished apartment on campus, outside of the Boarding House when off-duty. This arrangement provides personal space and a quiet place to recharge, an important self-care strategy when you are caring for others. Delicious breakfasts and dinners, as well as access to a full gym are also included.

Qualified teachers (OCT member in good standing), who are hired as Boarding Advisors have the choice to be matched with one class per term as a Learning-Support Teacher or to supply teach as needed in their qualified subject area. Each Boarding Advisor will also be involved in the school's rich co-curricular program through supervising the Learning Strategies testing room and coaching a team or supervising a school club. On weekends, Boarding Advisors organize and lead creative and entertaining programming to encourage students as they explore new interests and connect with each other through local community service opportunities, visiting Toronto hot-spots, and experiencing Canadian culture.

The successful candidate will ensure each boarding student feels safe and supported in their home-away-from home; that students thrive in the academic, co-curricular and boarding program as well as participate in and actively shape the vibrant Boarding program. Establishing relationships with and maintaining on-going communication with parents and guardians via, email, phone and in-person will come with ease to the successful candidate.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

With the ability to build genuine, caring relationships with the students and Boarding team, the ideal candidate is a good listener who is encouraging, fun, organized, and thoughtful, with a growth mind-set.

The successful candidate will have related experience caring for or living with adolescents and providing support for their social and emotional well-being and academic and co-curricular development. Experience working with LGBTQ+ youth would be an asset. Possession of OCT, BSW or equivalent qualifications would be ideal along with Red Cross/LSS, NLS, First Aid and CPR certifications. The ability to act as a role model and to demonstrate a positive lifestyle around mindfulness and healthy choices as well as sensitivity to cultural diversity will come with ease to you. The Boarding Advisor will be experienced with risk management practices and have the ability to maintain a calm, caring demeanour. Knowledge and familiarity of the GTA would be considered an asset. Boarding Advisor are required to live on campus full-time during the academic year (accommodations are suitable for one person only and no pets).
