How CIS Ontario Membership Stands Apart

With access to collective knowledge, professional development and learning opportunities for both educators and students, our sum is much greater than our parts.

CIS Ontario plays a unique and complementary role within the independent school ecosystem. We are not an accrediting or regulatory body—we are a membership association: a professional community that supports our member schools through connection, collaboration, and innovation.

A specific independent school might not belong to CIS Ontario because it belongs to another association, or it may not meet our membership criteria. For example, the school must have a Board of Directors to be eligible for membership in our organization.

A Unique Role Within a Broader Ecosystem

Many CIS Ontario member schools belong to the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS) which is an accrediting body. A CIS Ontario school might also be affiliated with other independent school associations like the Canadian Council of Montessori Administrators (CCMA) or the National Coalition of Girls' Schools (NCGS).

While accreditation and regulation are important elements in ensuring educational quality and accountability, CIS Ontario’s role is different. We do not conduct evaluations or compliance reviews. Instead, we focus on building a professional network that helps schools thrive through peer learning, leadership development, and student experiences.

There are a number of umbrella organizations serving independent schools in Ontario and each school determines which association will best serve its needs. There is no single body that represents all independent schools.

A Membership Rooted in Shared Purpose

Our member schools are diverse—ranging in size, philosophy, pedagogy, and culture. What brings them together isn’t standardization, but a shared commitment to educational excellence and a belief in the value of collaboration. CIS Ontario membership reflects schools that:

  • Are committed to continuous learning and improvement
  • Believe in the value of professional and peer-to-peer connection
  • Want to contribute to and benefit from a vibrant, mission-aligned network

Supporting Excellence Through Partnership

Our programs and services respond to the needs of educators, staff and school leaders in our member schools. We also work closely and respectfully alongside other organizations and associations to develop complementary partnerships in support of the needs of our member schools. (e.g. Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS), Middle States Association (MSA), Ontario’s faculties of education, the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) and other sector organizations).

Strength Through Community

CIS Ontario fosters a culture of generosity, connection, and shared leadership. Our members learn from each other, support each other, and shape the future of independent education together.

Joining CIS Ontario means:

  • Becoming part of a respected and values-driven network
  • Contributing to the strength and credibility of Ontario’s independent school sector
  • Engaging with peers who are as committed to education as you are
