- Student Programs
CISMF returned to Roy Thomson Hall on Saturday, April 5, 2025, with student performers from 39 of CIS Ontario's 44 member schools—and what an unforgettable day it was. This year’s CIS Ontario Music Festival stood out as a remarkable celebration of student talent, teamwork, and the transformative power of music. Congratulations to the student musicians, CISMF organizers, conductors, teachers, and everyone working behind the scenes. This event is a true testament to the energy, dedication, and meticulous planning it takes to bring such a memorable experience to life.
Unprecedented Participation and Passion
The festival marked a milestone with the largest choirs in CISMF history, including a Junior Choir nearing 500 voices. From Grades 3 to 12, students united in a shared pursuit of musical excellence. Following auditions in November, selected instrumentalists began preparing for a journey that would culminate in one of the most moving performances in the festival’s history.
In February, students gathered for their first group rehearsals, hosted at welcoming venues including Holy Trinity School, Pickering College, St. Andrew’s College, Country Day School, and the brand-new Aurora Town Centre. These initial gatherings set the tone for what would become a deeply collaborative and inspiring experience. After weeks of individual preparation, student performers returned in April for two days of intensive rehearsals, building not only musical cohesion but a sense of shared purpose and community.
A Grand Finale That Stirred the Soul
Under the direction of guest conductor Kathleen Allen, Artistic Director of the Amadeus Choir, the choirs delivered a powerful rendition of O’Siem by Grammy Award-winning artist Susan Aglukark. The piece, grounded in themes of unity and reconciliation, was made even more impactful with the accompaniment of traditional Indigenous drums by the St. Andrew’s College Drummers.
As 1,000 voices filled the hall, the audience was enveloped in a moment of awe, uplifted by the sound and spirit of young musicians singing as one. It was a performance that not only showcased technical skill but also radiated hope, compassion, and the belief that music has the power to bring people together in a divided world.
The Lasting Impact of CISMF
CISMF 2025 was more than a festival—it was a vivid reminder of music’s ability to unite and inspire. The passion and perseverance shown by these students reflect a future full of promise. Through their voices and instruments, they offered not just a performance, but a message: that joy, connection, and creativity will always resonate louder when shared.
