On April 11, 2025, Appleby College hosted TechFest 2025, a standout event in the CIS Ontario calendar that brought together K–12 independent school technology professionals for a day of deep learning, collaboration, and connection. Designed specifically for faculty and staff working in innovation, IT infrastructure, education systems, and data analytics, TechFest offered a uniquely tailored professional development experience that energized attendees with both practical takeaways and forward-thinking insights.
This year’s program featured two exceptional keynote speakers who set the tone for the day. Mike Biocchi, a cybersecurity and risk expert with over 15 years of experience in education, captivated the audience with a session on Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, and Risk in the K–12 Context. With a PhD and a CISSP certification, Mike addressed the pressing security challenges schools face today and shared actionable strategies to protect digital ecosystems, safeguard student data, and build institutional resilience.
Complementing this was a forward-looking keynote by Myles Harrison, Principal at PRAKTIKAI and a seasoned AI consultant. Drawing on experience from firms such as PwC, Accenture, and Brainstation, Myles delivered a compelling presentation on Generative AI in Education. He explored the transformative potential of AI-powered technologies, alongside ethical considerations, and provided a roadmap for how schools can effectively integrate AI tools into operations, instructional design, and IT strategy.
In addition to the keynote sessions, TechFest 2025 offered a rich lineup of workshops and breakout sessions led by professionals from across the CIS Ontario member school network. Topics ranged from data visualization and digital learning strategies to systems integration and emerging technology trends. Attendees valued the peer-led format, which fostered meaningful dialogue, collaborative problem-solving, and knowledge-sharing in a welcoming environment.
CIS Ontario members can now review the day’s content through the CISO Connect TechFest Library, which includes presentation slide decks, keynote recordings, and event photography. These materials are available in the Technology Network and the AI Network, under Resource Libraries in the menu bar.
